Legal Practice
Civil rights litigation in defense of due process, dignity, and the rights of immigrant communities.
About My Practice
I'm an attorney at a non-profit where I focus on immigration civil rights. Most of my work is federal litigation — habeas corpus petitions challenging unlawful detention, FTCA cases holding the government accountable for misconduct, and impact cases that take on anti-immigrant policies at a systemic level. I also do know-your-rights education in community settings.

Selected Case Highlights
Migrant family sues over US detention in what may be first challenge to courthouse arrests involving kids
The arrests of the family, a mother and her children who entered the country lawfully to seek asylum, were illegal and unjustified, said Kate Gibson Kumar, an attorney who is representing the family. "The essential question in our case is, when you have these families who are doing everything right, especially with young children, should there be some protection there?" Gibson Kumar said. "We say 'yes.'"
Civil rights groups sue to stop Texas immigration law
"Our fight against SB 4 isn't over until justice wins," Kate Gibson Kumar said in a statement. "SB 4 is not only unconstitutional, but a vile law that uses our Texas resources to harm communities across our state."
