About me
Attorney. Author. Occasional Performer.
Hi, I'm Kate. I'm a civil rights lawyer and a writer, which means I spend my days writing briefs for federal courts and my nights building imaginary worlds in my head.
I grew up curious about the world and stubborn about injustices big and small, a combination which has defined each step of my journey. I studied Political Science and Peace & Conflict Studies at UC Berkeley. After Cal, I became a kindergarten teacher, where I became well-versed in both the systemic disparities in our education system and how to make slime.
I attended law school at UT Austin, then clerked for a federal court. Now I'm an attorney at a non-profit where I focus on immigration civil rights.
Lately, whenever I get a spare moment, I write. My debut novel, Autumn Ostberg and the Halls of the Haven, is a YA dystopian sci-fi romance set in 2282, where humanity lives underground in a bunker monarchy with Regency-era aesthetics.
I speak fluent Spanish and basic Mandarin, with a habit of dabbling in other languages each time I take a trip. I live in Austin with my husband Vishnu and our two cats. When I'm not writing legal briefs or fiction, I enjoy walks, baking, singing and writing songs with my ukulele, beading fruit earrings, and crochet.
If you're here because you care about immigration justice, or want to escape our dystopian world by reading about a fictional one -- welcome! I'm thrilled to have you here.
